Xaverian (2-1) Everett

Junior sweeper Ben Weidenaar of Norwood headed home a Paul Dupre indirect free kick in the 61st minute to break a tie and propel the host Hawks to 2-1 win over Everett in the season opener yesterday.

Xaverian led 1-0 at halftime on a Dan Birely finish of a well-placed Greg Stokinger through ball 12 minutes before halftime. Short, crisp passing helped create the space for Stokinger to find Birely.

“In the first half we created a lot of quality opportunities during the run of play, something we talked about trying to do before the game,” said Hawks coach Gary Bowers. “Hopefully as time goes on we’ll convert more of those opportunities, but as far as approach I was very pleased.”

The Crimson Tide equalized with a 46th minute free kick.

Bowers was pleased with the defensive effort of the Hawks with Paul Dupre, Ben Langhauser and Conor Fitzgerald playing well in front of Weidenaar.
