BOYS SOCCER

Division 1 South first round

Brockton 7, Xaverian 1

The No. 13 Hawks got the start they wanted, scoring three minutes in. After that, not so much.

The No. 4 Boxers put in seven unanswered goals to rudely shuffle the visitors from the tournament to end their season at 9-6-4. Brockton moves on to the quarterfinals to face No, 5 Greater New Bedford.

Despite the loss, coach Gary Bowers lauded his team’s effort.

“All season long, they’ve approached the game with a good amount of professionalism, very easy to coach,” said Bowers. “We ran against a team, a very good squad, but as far as our players attitude was, they did a great job. They have a lot to be proud of, and that’s over the whole season, as well.”

The brief glimmer of hope came when Conor Fitzgerald sent a corner kick to Paul Dupre and he finished.

But Brockton scored in the 11th and 17th minutes, then again just before the half to seize control before pulling away in the second half.

Dave Richardson, Andy Hyatt, Steve Dawson, Alex Graziano, Alex Watling, Brandon Thomas, Chris Solomon and Matt Zytka played their last games for the Hawks.
